    NEW Information

    Accelerated Reader (AR)
AR reports have been printed and placed in your mailboxes. Take the time to review the report this week with your students. The "pink" highlights are the students that are not on target to meet their goal for this grading period. The "yellow" highlights are students whose AR Quiz averages that are too low. Perhaps they didn't read the book carefully or the book is too hard for the student.

Be sure to monitor the progress of the students that are highlighted for this week (either meeting their AR point goal or too challenging of a book). By the end of the week, students should be at 50% of their point goal. Continue to monitor and encourage students to make weekly targets and a comprehension score of at least 80%. Nita Green will have some books available to ensure all for our 3rd and 4th grade students to ensure they have a book on their reading level each day.

Students should be asked to take home a book every night and read for 20 minutes. Be sure to communicate with parents about their child's AR point goal and their progress toward reaching that goal.

Book Fair starts this week with a Family Night on October 20 beginning @ 6:00pm. Please encourage your students to visit the book fair at this time.

    Challenging students (#kidsdeserveit | #YouMatter | #TeamKid)
Sometimes kids can be very challenging to for us to work with. I was reminder of that idea this week when I spent 3 days in a cabin with nine 10 year boys at Camp Grady Spruce. Relationships are key to helping a kid to succeed and sometimes that's all I had to work with.

Last week I had a "special friend" during my time at camp... and because I'm a "Principal" this kid will listen to me and follow my directions, right?

Let me tell you a secret about the principalship... my title or position has little impact on a student's behavior and even less in an outdoor education camp setting. However, developing trust, respect, and showing care with my "special friend" did so much more than any position I held.

To help foster my relationship with this kid, I ate meals with them, carried their water bottle in my backpack, helped them look for loss money, ensured they didn't wear the clothes from the previous day, and more. I did everything I could to communicate my love for this kid and at times we had some challenging conversations.

My special friend was considered "challenging", "difficult", or "impossible" to other people. But these were no reasons to give up on this kid. To me, my special friend craved love, affirmation, and some attention... and that's exactly what he got from me.

The challenge for this week (and possibly all year)... give some additional love, affirmation, or attention to one of your "special friends". Perhaps you feel like you already do... then I would encourage you to keep it up. These kids crave the attention you're giving them. You're probably the only person in their life that is willing to give them what they need. So even though it's hard... love them anyway.

After all... our "special friends" deserve it!
