Here is a brief description of Dr. Tate's session:

Formative Assessment in a Brain-compatible Classroom:
How Do We Really Know They’re Learning?

If you are waiting until after you have planned your lesson to determine how you will assess it, you are already too late! Instead, as soon as you have decided what you want students to know or be able to do, the second step is to define how you will know when they get there. Furthermore, for your assessment to be as effective as possible, you must take into account the different ways of learning and knowing that students have (often called “multiple intelligences” or “gifts”).

This highly engaging workshop will deal with both traditional and more authentic forms for assessing those ways, since both types should be included in a student’s portfolio, in order to best enable their success in their college or career path. You will leave this session with over 50 products and performances to help you know if they are learning, as well as the methods (i.e., checklists and rubrics) for assessing them. This workshop has been called practical, informative, and a great deal of fun!

Some lucky participants will win a free copy of the book of the same name!

MAPs Testing
We will be starting our Middle of the Year MAPs testing this week. This is the schedule that was shared with you all before the break:
Please ensure you communicate with students to do there best and take their time for this administration. We're looking for students to show some growth from the first administration that will help us determine RtI groups. Reminder... please use the same accommodations for this administration that was used on the first test. If you have questions about accommodations, please let us know.

We'll be sharing some resources and information with you to help you make informed decisions for this next election year so you will know where candidates stand on educational issues. Below is a link for some important dates to keep in mind.

New Information

Instructional Material Storage
With many of you getting new instructional materials for your classroom it has been requested that certain materials be stored in the book room. We have been in there trying to move items around, but at this time we will not be able to add any additional materials to the book room.

With more instructional space that has been added the past couple of years that room now is the testing room/PIEMS records room/supply room/book room. This has eaten up any extra space we have had in there. Please utilize your work rooms, POD storage rooms and classrooms to store additional materials you have. Please also remember you can use a handful of the math workbooks each year. These are great resources for tutoring/RTI, or to send home with a student needing extra practice!

Virtual Chat with Santa (by Julia Robinson)
I just had to send this link to you for the Virtual Chat with Santa Claus on December 12th. This link also contains a form where you can submit questions for Santa and other pertinent information about the event.

I also like the email.santa webcam site and reindeer cam. They are lots of fun too.

Staff Meeting/Christmas Ornament Exchange
Our next staff meeting will be on Monday, December 11 @ 3:15pm will be used as a Christmas Ornament Exchange hosted by Martha Edwards. Bring a favorite finger food to share and a wrapped ornament (under $10) to exchange. A directional Christmas game may also be played, so having $3 ready would add to fun!

Progress Reports (by Lori Dreiling)
I will be printing progress reports Wednesday 12/6. Please have all grades in by 9:30. I will print the reports and put them in your mailbox. Please send them home on Thursday. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Hour of Code
On Wednesday, all staff and students will be participating in the Hour of Code contest hosted by our district. Jennifer Chaney and several of our interventionists will be helping our students to code for one (1) hour this day. I would like to see our staff member coding also to model this with their kids. This is a great opportunity to take pictures and share on social media with the hashtags #HourofCode & #RCISDJoy

Secret Santa (by Martha Edwards)
Just a reminder....
When: December 4th - 8th Monday - Friday
How: Drop off your gifts in the office and we will deliver them
Rules: Small surprise (under $5.00) every day

March Primary Election

We'll be sharing some resources and information with you to help you make informed decisions for this next election year so you will know where candidates stand on educational issues. Below is a link for some important dates to keep in mind.

New Information

Welcome Back to School
It's the first day back with your students after their longest break of the school year. Monday will be the perfect time to review important expectations, routines, and procedures for the kids. It's the perfect time to review your classroom Social Contract, Hallway behavior, Cafeteria expectations, Quiet Signals, Recess procedures, and more.

It helps to set the tone for the next several weeks before Christmas and will help ensure everything goes smoothly.

HUMANeX Climate Surveys
On Monday, Nov 27th, the district will be releasing the HUMANeX Climate Survey. The purpose of the survey to get feedback from all staff members and to develop some action steps staff members can work throughout the school year. In previous years, we have received some high marks about our campus climate because of the work you all do to help support and encourage each other.

We're looking for 100% participation for our campus. The survey will be emailed with details that relate to the survey as well as live links. After the data is collect, we will have a feedback session on Tuesday, January 9th.

Student Learning Objective (SLO) for TTESS Staff Members
Just a reminder that this is the week to complete the 1st Checkpoint in the Student Growth Tracker. Be sure that you evaluate each student in the class that you chose. You will want to look at work samples, tests, (whatever is appropriate) and go the the Student Growth Tracker and complete the 1st Checkpoint.

The point of this checkpoint is for you to reflect and decide if the instructional strategies you're using in the classroom are giving the desired result. It is very likely that every student will not grow from the initial rating. Remember that the purpose of the SLO process is for  you, the TEACHER, to reflect on your professional practice (instructional strategies). The most important thing to take away is if students are not growing, we want to encourage you to change the strategies to achieve the desired results of your SLO. Please do not stress if every student hasn’t growth - that is sort of the point - to take a look at the instructional strategies that you're using to see what needs to be modified.

We can talk more about this process in your PLCs this week. Just know that Brittany and I are here to help you with your SLO goals. You cannot mess up this process - Please just let us know if you have any questions.

MAPs Testing/RtI
Just a reminder... if new students arrive, you will want to give them the "screening" version of the test until the Winter window opens on January 10th. Please reminder to give the same accommodations that you gave to your students in the Fall.

Please be sure you're documenting your Tier 3 students. Students that failed STAAR last year or below the 21ile MUST be served in RtI.

Chickfila Spirit Night
Come and support our campus on Tuesday Night @ Chickfila this week. Be sure to encourage the students and their families to visit too.

PTO Holiday Shop
Our PTO is hosting the Holiday shop again for us this school year. This will start next week (Dec 4-8) where students can purchase items for family members for Christmas. Encourage the students to be mindful of their money this week and to keep purchased items in specific spot in your classroom like their backpacks.
