E-News 2.27.14

So I decided to create a video for you to watch this version of the E-News and included some "Show Notes" below for hyperlinks to other resources mentioned in this video.

I shot this video in ONE take and intentionally didn't watch it... so I know it's full of errors and I repeat a lot of the same words. Hopefully, I will do better in the next video, but at least you have something to laugh at.

Please let me know what you think about this way of communicating information with you. You can leave comments below on the blog, the YouTube Channel, or Google+ Community.

Video: How to Escape Education's Death Valley

This is a video I watched in my School Finance class at Dallas Baptist University yesterday. I love Sir Ken Robinson and his views on creativity and the learning process. I had you all watch a previous video with Sir Robinson narrating earlier in the school year.

In this video, Sir Robinson is giving a TED talk titled "How to escape education's death valley." This video is about 20 minutes long, but it's worth the investment (he's very funny in this one too). There is no assignment for this video, I just thought it was a great talk and wanted to share.

E-News

Brainpop http://www.brainpop.com/

Have you guys ever used this resource? I loved having this as a classroom teacher because of the videos and activities I could do with students. Since I left the classroom, they have included the Texas state standards with their videos, so teachers can search my standard for the right video for their students.

Be sure to explore this resource. It has a lot to offer the classroom teacher. When we attended TCEA, our campus received a free 30-trial that I activated today. Our username/password are:

Use it and let me know what you think!

Remind 101 - www.remind101.com

Hopefully most of you are receiving the Text Messages from me about updates and school news via Remind 101. I know our 4th grade team is using this service with their parents to communicate important news and send last minute reminders. Even Mr. Worthy is using this service with the principals to share last minute news.

Why use text messages to communicate? Generally speaking many of our parents don't read the paper reminders and updates we send home with students. If we send emails, only 22% of emails get read. However, about 98% of texts get read and 91% of adults have their mobile phone within arms reach 24/7 (Source: Mashable).

So check out the Remind 101 service and see if this is something that would be helpful for you to communicate with your parents or students (because you know kids have phones too).

Also, be sure you are subscribed to receive Text Messages from me. You can find those directions here. If you are having trouble, please just ask. This system was very helpful on Monday to share updates about afternoon schedule times.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to our Teacher of the Month

Ashley Gilliland, 4th Grade

Along with this posting, I'm thrilled to announce the school board approved my recommendation to hire Mrs. Andrea Ortega as our new Art Teacher! She has been working so hard in this role for us while Mrs. Conoly has been out. As you all know, she has been doing a wonderful job as a member of the Special Team and we're blessed to have her officially as a part of the staff. Please extend to her a warm Scott Family welcome at your earliest on your convenience.

This conference was awesome and our Royse City teachers had an amazing time. Last year, I was the only person from Royse City to attend while this year we had 27 people representing our district. Julia Robinson was especially excited about two individuals we are bringing to Royse City in August for our district Professional Development days (August 6 & 7). Tammy Worcester and Monica Martinez are two ladies you will hear more about in the next several months. Julia writes about her experiences on HER blog (be sure to check that out). Both ladies share their resources on their websites:
