    NEW Information

    Calendar Feedback
Kaicy Thomas will be representing our campus of the NEW district calendar for the 2017-2018 school year. If you have any suggestions you would like the committee to consider, please let her know.

    A-F Accountability System
TEA will be updating the current accountability system with a letter grade system. This new system will look at five (5) areas including our local community based accountability system. Student performance, progress & populations will continue to be important moving forward. There will be a Community Forum on Wednesday, December 7 @ 6:00pm at the Administration Building for people to learn more details. The link below is the current information we have about this new system & more information will be shared as it becomes available:

    MAP Testing Window
The middle of the school year MAP testing window will be January 5th - 27th. A schedule will be sent out after Christmas Break with your homerooms times/dates for each test. Here's a couple of tips to help ensure a successful testing session this round:
    • Look at the students that took a long time last administration - be sure to monitor them closely for this round of testing
    • The first 7-8 questions will determine what grade level the student will be assessed on - please monitor what the students are doing
    • The teacher can pause the entire class to allow for breaks as needed
    • Encourage the students to write their RIT Goal on a post-it note when they go in to take their test - have them write their scores down at the end
    Lesson Fixer-Upper Conference
Julia Robinson is planning to a different way to deliver professional development for teachers. She will be offering for you all to either participate in-person at the high school OR digitally from your classroom. More details about this process will be coming very soon - but all teachers will have to participate in some part in a Twitter chat. So save the date for Tuesday, January 3rd for the Lesson Fixer-Upper Conference.

ESL Certification is due this coming July 2017 - please ensure you have taken your test & contacted TEA to get the certification on your teaching license. If you have any questions about this process, please come visit me.

    Scott Elementary Facility Update
Playground Renovations Project - The district is planning to update our playground equipment by replacing the mulch with a sponge-like material, moving both swing sets to a more central location, and covering the playground with a large shade. The project is expected to begin in December and be completed in about 3 weeks from the start. Also the project will include additional concrete so students will be able to walk to the playground without stepping into mud on damp/wet days & some additional seating with trash cans.

Please be prepared to make different plans for recess or outdoor activities during this update.

Also, the district will be replacing our current exterior door mats with news ones.

        PigOut Pay Day
Tuesday is PigOut Pay Day - so grab your lunch and make your way to the Teacher's Lounge on Tuesday this week. This is a great time to talk and share with other people on other teams throughout the campus. We'll have some delicious treats waiting for you too!

        StuCo Leadership Workshop
Friday is a VERY busy day for Scott Elementary.... Snapshot, Storybook Character Day, parade, door decorating contest, etc.... So ONE more thing to add to that plate is the Student Council Leadership Workshop that we're hosting.

We'll have about 100 additional folks on campus that day for various school districts. Our RCISD student council kids are all participating this day too ... so we'll have a lot of special attention on this school day. The StuCo Leadership Workshop will be in the Gym so the Specials schedule will be different for that day.

            NEW Information

North Texas Giving Day | Education Foundation
Thank you to everyone that helped promote and contributed to the Education Foundation on North Texas Giving Day. We had a great showing of support and were the #1 campus for the day (I love seeing Scott being #1). It's because of your support that we were able to give so much support for the Ed Foundation. It's still NOT too late to contribute and participate. They are still accepting donations through October 30th. We have forms & envelops in the office if you wish to participate.

A special shout out to Martha Edwards for counting money & organizing all the student and staff contributions for that day. You're our Super Hero!

Instructional Planning Day | Kagan Cooperative Learning
The district will providing training of Kagan Instructional Strategies (@KaganOnline). This is an amazing organization with some great tools for all teachers to use in the classroom. We'll be meeting at Miss May Vernon on Friday morning ... I would highly suggest CARPOOLING with another Scott Elementary staff member (parking will be limited).

The focus will be on Cooperative Learning Strategies - were teamwork and working in pairs will help create a greater level of student engagement. Kagan specializes in engaging all learning including the reluctant ones. You can learn more about the Kagan Workshops with this LINK.

504 Coordinators will be having an legal update in the Admin Training Room with Kenny Kaye Hudson. Also, BAU will be working with Dorcas Schale with updates also in the ALC Training Room (PM Only).

1st Grading Period ENDS | Report Cards
As this first grading period is coming to a close, be sure you're following the RCISD Grading Policy. Lori Dreiling will be sending out information about submitting grades for this 1st report card soon.

If you have any students with failing grades for this 1st Six Weeks, you and I will be meeting to discuss interventions and supports for those students (RtI, Tutoring, homework for additional practice, etc). Also, you MUST conduct a parent conference with each of these students ASAP before the scheduled P/T conference day on October 31 - we need parents to be aboard with supporting the students sooner rather than later.

            RtI Groups & MAPs Testing
Now that MAPs testing is over, I know many grade level teams have started to create intervention groups for RtI. If you need help with that process, please let Brittany Lancaster or myself know and we'll come help you through this process. We'll be checking in with you from time to time to help support you all with RtI.

Also, we have several teachers attending training for MAP Reports next Thursday & Friday, so someone on your team will know how to use the report to BEST plan for intervention.

              Employee Payroll Contribution Campaign
Additionally, we are looking for 100% of our staff members to participate in the Employee Payroll Contribution Campaign. Scott Elementary has benefited from the monies given to the Education Foundation through grants awarded to the campus, first-year teacher grants, and staff recognition programs. Also we have received iPads for you to use during instruction because of these monies.

All you would have to do make a One-Time Donation to the Education Foundation OR sign-up for the Payroll Deduction Program (min. of $2.00/month). ONLY $2.00/month!!

If we have 100% participate, we will be recognized by the district and given a sign that will hang in the building so that everyone that walks into the building will know we support the Education Foundation. So let's all contribute that we can get that sign! We have flyers in the front office if you need to sign-up.

                    NEW Information

                    First Week is DONE
Congratulations on a very successful 1st week of school! You all are training, modeling, and teaching the students your expectations for the school year and it shows. Also I'm loving the Social Media pictures of you with your students this last week. Great job sharing our story with the RCISD community and the whole world. I've had a few principal friends text me this week asking me what you'll have been doing with your kids this week. (Yes the rest of the world is paying attention to Scott Elementary). Please continue and keep up the excellent work.

                    MAP Training
Susan Lay will be on campus Thursday, September 1 @ 3:30pm to help our campus understand the expectations for MAP training for Scott Elementary. Apryl McElroy and others have been working to schedule our these assessments for our campus during the week of September 12 (for most of the campus).

Reminder, please have the online training completed this week. There are 3 videos for you all to view. If you are helping in any way with MAP testing, these videos are for you. You can access the website with this link: https://destinationpd.nwea.org/

                    T-TESS & Appraisal Update
We are continuing to update the TTESS & Appraisal information. The plan to get you this information ASAP. In the meantime, be thinking about your goal(s) for the school year. We will be scheduling Goal Setting conferences between the dates of September 19-29.

                    Procedures & Routines
Because it's the second week of school, please continue to teach/train your student the expectations for your ALL common areas and your classroom.

                    Morning Duty
                    1. Ensure you are parking in the staff parking lot to help the traffic in the front of the building.
                    2. Please ensure you are arriving to your post on time during the morning duty @ 7:14am.
                    3. Front door folks... please assist with opening car doors, greeting parents and visitors, and helping with the direction of traffic. This expectation continues throughout the school year (rain or shine).
                    4. Gym/Cafe folks... Monitor students as they enter the area. Ensure they are lining up correctly with their classes. Be sure to check visitors for ID badges from the office. If someone does NOT have a badge, please escort them back to the office to get their badge. BEST safety practices include walking the individual back to the office NOT simply stating they need to return to the office and walk away.

                    Lunch Reminders
                    1. Make sure you remind students to not save seats, or skip seats.
                    2. Remind the lunchbox kids to gather straws, napkins and spoons when they walk by the cafe lines. They are wanting to get up to get these items as soon as they sit down.
                    3. Please review cafe behavior expectations with your classes. Not getting up without raising their hand, not going to visit other classrooms, walking, lining up with a zero, cleaning up their spot, etc.

                    WOW Wednesday
Save the date for Wednesday, September 7 ELAR folks! Angela Homan will be sharing "Source Boxes/Stephanie Harvey "Digging Deeper into Reading" in the RCISD Board from 3:45-4:45pm. This is a great opportunity to get some credit hours for the RCISD PD Plan.

                    Blog Post to Share
I saw this on Twitter recently... it's a Blog Post written by a fellow administrator. I would encourage each of you to read the post. It's a great uplifting piece if you at any time felt unsure about yourself this last week (which would apply to ALL of us). Please read it and let me know you thoughts.

Regardless... we have some very special GUESTS coming to school so it's almost SHOWTIME. So put on a smiling face because "Snow White Never Has a Bad Day" and leave Cruella DeVil at home. Get yourself a #RCGoat (Greatest of All Time) friend to support you this year and be the BEST teacher your kids need. These Kids Deserve IT so make it the great start of the school year.

                      Professional Development & Flex Days

According to the 2016-2017 Calendar, each contracted employee must complete three days of professional development to take the place of the 3 days in next year's calendar that you can "flex". Julia Robinson sent out an email on June 22 with an update to the required compliance courses for all staff members. Below are the details of that message:

I just want to remind you that you about your compliance courses for the 2016-2017 school year. As many of you have already discovered, we are using a new website (Safe Schools) for most of the compliance courses. Each of you should have received an email from Mr. Blaine (and Safe Schools) that lists the courses that are found on that website. If you have any trouble with accessing these courses, please email Mr. Lloyd Blaine at blainel@rcisd.org. For your convenience, we have placed a link on the iACT website for each of the required courses. You will also notice when you log in that their are courses that are "suggested". If you complete these courses, they can count toward the RCISD Professional Development Recognition Levels (Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond) in the fall.

                      Required Courses are:
Bloodborne Pathogens (refresher) - 13 minutes (New Teachers must do the Original Course)
                      FERPA - 14 minutes
Child Abuse: Mandatory Reporting - 26 minutes
Online Safety: What Every Educator Needs to Know - 29 minutes
Youth Suicide: Awareness and Prevention - 29 minutes
                      Classroom Safety - 16 minutes

This part of the compliance course requirements equals 2 hours and 7 minutes. As you can see these classes are shorter than the courses in the past. As a reminder, every course has a short quiz (passing is 70%) that is required.

In addition to those courses there are two (2) additional training with links that are found on the iACT website. Both of these courses will require you to create a login if you have not used them before.

Required Courses on the iACT website
                      1. Sexual Abuse Prevention: Stewards of Children, Darkness to Light - This is listed as a 2 hour course
                      2. Autism 101 - This is listed as a 2 thirty minutes modules.

Once you have completed the courses listed above (from Safe Schools and the iACT website), your compliance training will be complete! Please make sure your print and/or save your certificates for the 2 courses on the the iACT website. You will need to provide those to your campus administrator. The Safe Schools website will generate a list for your principal of those staff who have completed training.

Thanks again for completing these courses. We will all enjoy the "flex days" in the fall and spring! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let us know.

                      A Very Special Day

So today was a very special day because I had the opportunity to tell Judy Caskey GOODBYE!!!

Yes last week we received our state test scores for our campus (it was crazy with me in San Antonio and Julia Robinson in North Carolina - lots of phone calls, text messages, and emails that day). I'm so very proud of the work everyone has put into this process that created this data. Here's just a few highlights from the accountability summary:
                      • Reading 80% all students (74% Hispanic | 84% White | 71% Eco Dis | 80% ELL)
                      • Math 89% all students (88% Hispanic | 91% White | 87% Eco Dis | 93% ELL)
                      • Writing 69% all students (63% Hispanic | 73% White | 65% Eco Dis | 60% ELL)
                      • Scott Elementary was the ONLY elementary campus in the district to maintain our scores from the previous year; our Eco Dis students increased 6% from previous year in Writing; this was a targeted improvement plan goal.
                      • About 50% of the 4th grade students met/exceeded progress in Reading/Math.
So basically where does that leave us for the State Accountability? Please understand the following scores are unofficial testing scores created by Eduphoria - there could be some errors in the data and should NOT be shared with parents, students, or other external stakeholders.
                      • Index 1 Student Achievement - 81 (last year 79 | current year's target 60)
                      • Index 2 Student Progress - 30 (last year 38 | previous year's target 30)
                      • Index 3 Closing Performance Gaps - 47 (last year 45 | previous year's target 28)
                      • Index 4 Postsecondary Readiness - 41 (last year 41 | current year's target 12)
Please keep in mind we have to meet Index 1 OR Index 2, Index 3, & Index 4. Also, Index 2 & 3 target scores are based on the bottom 5th percentile (they're moving targets).

In short, we're projecting to be out of the campus improvement process! Judy Caskey, targeted improvement plan, and quarterly reports are going away.

Everyone had a part of play with our campus accountability - teaching students in 3rd & 4th grade, tutoring kids after school, preparing them for the testing grade levels, encouraging each other with positive notes, snacks, etc, supporting the campus improvement process, getting parents to read with their kids, promoting a POSITIVE campus culture, helping to get kids to school so they can learn, creating engaging lessons/projects/activities that student WANT to be at school, sharing ideas/resources with each other, and praying (yes actually praying for our campus)!

I'm so very thankful to everyone and appreciate ALL the blood, sweat and tears for the last 3 years of this process... yes it has been a long process.

We'll look at this data more carefully in August when you all return, but I just wanted to say thank you! Have a wonderful summer break!!

                        Important Reminders

                        Staff Parking Lot
I need ALL staff members to park on the side parking lot for the rest of the school year. I know parking in the front is very convenient but we need to open up these spaces for our school community.

                        Student Retention
By the end of this month, you'll need to have student names submitted to Mr. Jacobs for possible retention. These students should have been in STAT/RtI process all year.

                        NEW Information

                        Field Day Group Picture
Thank you everyone for putting up with this crazy idea for a group picture. The PTO did a great job with our TShirts and the kids look amazing. Thanks also to Mrs. Gowen for climbing up on the roof for the shot. Yay!!

                        Teacher Workday & Checkout
Just a reminder... all staff members will be working a 6 hour day on Friday, June 3rd. There will be a BRIEF staff meeting @ 10:15am for all Royse City ISD employees that will be returning next year. Mr. Webb has a group presenting to all the campuses.

All staff members must checkout with me before heading out for the summer. I will begin checking out staff members @ 12:00pm on Friday (not before). Be sure to have all the items on your checkout sheet completed. Anything on the sheet that isn't completed, you will have to come back the following week for your signatures.

                        Summer Professional Development
Be sure to go back to your Summer PD Plans on the Google Sheet. Add a NEW line for each additional training you will be attending, the date of the training, and the number of hours you expect for this workshop. This information will be very important when we return in August so we can add it to your portfolio in Eduphoria and use it for your TTESS PD plan.

If you are attending the Revolutionizing Learning Conference, it's 6 hours for each day. Also the dates for the Region 10 Compliance Training is June 6-September 6.
